Our New Maternity Wing is officially open

What an achievement! In less than one year we have been able to build and open our new maternity wing. The official opening was marked by a traditional ceremony on February 14, 2023 with the local Governor and Community Elders in attendance.

We are currently very focused on fundraising for much needed equipment and supplies. Thanks to a number of generous donors we have been able to start purchasing the first of them, including obstetric and paediatric beds, labour and delivery beds and infant birthing equipment. But much more is still needed to bring the maternity centre to level the community requires.

It is with profound sadness, that we announce the sudden passing of Stephen Benjamin Juma Obiero Scott, co-founder of Caring Partners Global (CPG), at the age of 73. With his wife and children by his side, Stephen was called to be with the Lord on April 18, 2022 at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu, Kenya.

Stephen first came to Canada in 1969. He returned to Kenya in 1974 for two months when he met his life partner, Sylvia Adoyo Denge. Stephen and Sylvia were married at the Kisumu Hotel August 3, 1974 and returned to Canada August 28, 1974. Stephen completed three degrees in Canada; at the Ontario Bible College, Wilfred Laurier University, and the University of Toronto.

Throughout his life, Stephen's passion for serving others was unparalleled. He found joy in teaching high school science, spending the first two years of his teaching career in Moosonee, before joining the Waterloo District School Board where he spent 31 years before retiring from Waterloo Collegiate Institute in 2010.

Stephen and  Sylvia established the charitable organization Caring Partners Global (CPG) in 1996 to provide access to much needed health care in his home village of Matangwe in Western Kenya. Over the past 25 years their vision has grown from a primary care clinic to a health care centre providing inpatient, outpatient and outreach services. A student scholarship program established by CPG has provided access to education for over 250 students, who otherwise would not have been able to receive the promise of a better future. Through their leadership, improvements have been made to local agriculture, access to clean water has improved and the community has come together to build local sustainability.

Stephen’s dream for his home community, his strong faith and dedicated leadership has had an incredible impact on the lives of so many. He leaves a legacy of hope for a better future as the communities he inspired both in Kenya and Canada, continue the work he began “to change lives, one community at a time”.

Stephen was a devoted husband to Sylvia Adoyo and loving father to Christine (Racil), Sarah (Isaac), Joshua, and Rachel. Stephen especially cared for his grandchildren Noah, Lily, and Alexander. Fondly known as Chief, his many friends, colleagues, and community members both in Kenya and Canada, will miss Stephen's presence. 

Stephen was laid to rest in his home village of Matangwe on May 2, 2022. A celebration of Stephen’s life will be held at Benton Street Baptist Church, Kitchener, Ontario on June 25, 2022 at 1 pm.

A message from Sylvia and Stephen Scott, co-founders, CPG

Twenty-five years ago, our founders Steve and Sylvia Scott, with the help of many others, started CPG to create the Matangwe Health and Community Development Project (MCHDP) in Western Kenya.

A quarter century is certainly a milestone and here is some of what we have accomplished together:

·       The clinic is now a hospital, with 15 inpatient beds and numerous outpatient clinics and services and is nearing self-sufficiency.

The education scholarship program continues to thrive, with more than 80 students a year receiving sponsorship from friends in Canada. There are now more students whom we have sponsored that graduated from high school, college, and university than we currently sponsor and those students are more likely to be employed after graduation.

·       We continue to provide a pre-school and school lunch programs and uniforms for the local students.

·       Economic development projects are continuing.

·       The mortuary helps support the hospital and MCHDP is a valued employer in the area.

·       The agricultural gardens offset the cost of feeding patients and the surplus goes to the school lunch program.

·       The agriculture program provides education to local farmers about enhanced agricultural practices and climate-based crops.

·       There is access to treated water at the clinic now.

·       The cost to bring drinking water to the villages has been halved.

·       We can now count more than 100 Canadians who have volunteered at Matangwe and we are awaiting the time when travel is permitted and Matangwe can host more volunteers.

There is still much to be done in the next few years. But there is so much to celebrate, thanks to the support of our partners, our donors and the selfless dedication of our committed volunteers.

What began as the recognition of needs in a community half a world away and a faith-based motivation to help has had a positive impact. Tomorrow a student may be at home in a grass hut using a solar-powered charge to run his or her computer.  Their world is changing. Hope to resilience to positive change. Together, as caring partners, this change is good.  For this we thank you.

Dear Friends of Caring Partners Global (CPG) and the Matangwe Project:

Today as Canadians we don a mask, wash our hands often and practice safe distancing. Daily life has changed for all of us and are likely to have stayed safe. Many of us have friends, family and neighbours who have struggled this year: with Covid, with isolation, with mental health, with work. This is a burden we share and we are ready to share something to feel really good about. How might we do that? One way is to express our appreciation for the frontline heroes who have been there for us this year. Another way is to pay it forward and help others – family, friends, neighbours and others. This Christmas we are asking you to lend a hand to others you are not likely ever know as well as your family, friends or neighbours.

In Kenya Covid-19 is yet another challenge where HIV, meningitis, malaria, cholera and a long list of other diseases are endemic.  CPG is committed to supporting the Matangwe Hospital, an 18-bed facility which serves 25,000 people.  The staff at Matangwe are our heroes. They have worked beyond the call and struggle to ensure their patients have personal protective equipment (PPE) during healthcare and patient outreach. We can tell our Matangwe heroes how much we appreciate what they do, but they also need our help.

We are seeking $10,000 to help procure PPE for Matangwe. Our frontline heroes in Matangwe need your support to work safely. They provide masks and sanitizer at area schools and workplaces when they provide outreach services; as well as supply their own patients and staff.

 Covid 19 has infected millions of people across the world, has caused untold hardships and literally changed the lives of almost everyone. It is no different in Matangwe, Kenya. While the current number of cases and deaths in Kenya is not as large as in many countries, it remains a major threat and has disrupted the lives of Kenyans from the large cities to the small communities such as Matangwe. Some of the effects are detailed below: 

HEALTH CARE

The Matangwe hospital has not had any cases identified at this time but there have been cases at nearby Hospitals. This has had the effect of increasing volumes at Matangwe as many were concerned with attending the impacted Hospitals out of fear of becoming infected with Covid 19.  In Matangwe there are many vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, those who are immunocompromised due to HIV/Aids or those individuals suffering from other communicable diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.  In early March the Matangwe Hospital put into place many processes to both screen for Covid and to protect the patients and staff. This has meant an increase in costs for security services, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and redesigning the spaces to maintain distance between patients and provide isolation opportunities. 

EDUCATION

Kenyan schools have been closed since March 2020, with no return date identified. This has had a direct impact on all of the students sponsored through the CPG Sponsorship program.  Since the schools closed, the lunch program that was so important for our primary school students has ceased, given the requirement for self-isolation. For many of the children this was the major source of healthy food in their diet and there is concern about food security during this time.  We are currently exploring options for restoring the lunch program in a different format that can meet the public health standards. 

ECONOMIC IMPACTS

MCDHP had to temporarily close their morgue and funeral home in response to the restriction of assembly guidelines. This resulted in a more than 25 percent loss of revenue generation and lay off of 3 staff.  With no government support in place for loss of employment or business income due to Covid, there is an ongoing challenge to support day to day operations.

VULNERABLE POPULATIONS

We are thankful to the team at MCHDP for responding to meet the needs of isolated elderly in the community through regular wellness checks and spiritual care, daily meal deliveries, support with housekeeping and personal care. As well, sponsored orphaned primary school students continue to thrive in foster care in a stable environment while awaiting to return to their respective boarding schools.

The Caring Partners Global (CPG) Annual General Meeting was held on May 22, 2020. The meeting took place through videoconferencing due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic. Overall, 2019 was a very good year and we were able to celebrate many accomplishments in health care, education and food security at Matangwe. THANK YOU to all our generous donors and sponsors who supported our drive to obtain a haemoglobin analyzer! Because of your generosity, we are now able to purchase and implement this life-saving treatment at the hospital in Matangwe. We plan to implement this service over the next few months, saving many patients the challenge of traveling to another community to receive this service.

The tests will be completed on site and the results will be readily available. Once we have it in place, we can test for anemia, other serious illnesses and common infections. It will be particularly helpful for pregnant women, patients with malaria who require immediate care and the older, frail adults who cannot make the trip to another community without great difficulty.

Now the doctors will readily have the information they need to start treatment as early as possible and improve the outcomes for our patients.
